Sci-fi is a genre that you either love or hate, and since it’s a niche market movie studios often release sci-fi films with less fanfare than they deserve. Even if you’re a sci-fi fan, it can be easy to miss some solid films in the category. To right this wrong, here’s a list of great sci-fi flicks that you might have missed. Of course, if we missed any, please let us know in the comments!
10. Equilibrium
(2002)
Christian Bale stars in this sci-fi action flick about a future where all forms of emotion have been outlawed. There are a couple points where some of the supporting cast seems to forget that they’re not supposed to feel, but even so Equilibrium has some great ideas and cool scenes. It’s best known for its “gun-kata,” a martial art based entirely on the science of gunfights.
9. eXistenZ
(1999)
A creepy, gloppy film from David Cronenberg about the testing of a new virtual reality game, eXistenZ is certainly not a film for everyone. It’s twisty and filled with lots of shifts between different planes of reality and has several moments of Cronenberg’s trademark “body horror,” including a pretty disturbing biological gun. But there’s an even bigger reason many people haven’t seen it. It was released less than one month after another virtual reality movie you may have heard of: The Matrix.
8. Sunshine
(2007)
Sunshine isn’t a perfect film, but it’s got some great ideas and an interesting visual style that make it worth checking out. On a voyage into space to reignite the dying Sun, a team of scientists encounter disaster that could spell death for them and, in turn, the rest of humanity. You’ll never think about sunlight the same way again.
7. Pitch Black
(2000)
Forget the junky sequel The Chronicles of Riddick. Pitch Black transcends its Aliens rip-off roots, thanks to great characters, especially the magnetic murderer Riddick, played by Vin Diesel. He’s a bad guy who’s called up to protect a group of stranded space travelers from killer aliens, if only because they increase his own chances for survival. The spin-off video game is also great, but seriously, the sequel is crap.
6. The Hidden
(1987)
There’s an FBI agent on the trail of a brutal criminal, and each one has a secret: they’re both aliens in human bodies. The Hidden is a little dated by today’s standards, but it’s still got some great ideas and great performances, especially professional weirdo Kyle Maclachlan as the FBI agent/intergalactic hunter.
5. A Boy and his Dog
(1975)
Based on a novella by sci-fi master Harlan Ellison, A Boy and his Dog stars Don Johnson as a kid in a post-apocalyptic world who has a telepathic link with his dog. Together they stumble into an underground society that has sexy and sinister ideas in mind for the Boy. Why aren’t you watching it right now?
4. Primer
(2004)
Created by a small team of filmmakers with a budget of around $7000, Primer is one of the most intelligent, mind-bending sci-fi movies in decades and one of the most complex time-travel films ever. Writer/director/producer Shane Carruth is a former mathematician and engineer, so to say that Primer is a thinking man’s sci-fi film is probably underselling it. It’s a tough film to follow, but you can’t have a list of vital sci-fi movies without Primer.
3. Moon
(2009)
A sad, smart film from David Bowie’s son Duncan Jones, Moon is a film that works entirely because of the performance of Sam Rockwell. As someone about to end a three-year stint working on the moon, the main character Sam discovers a secret that changes everything about his job and his life, but to say more would be to do a disservice to the movie.
2. Silent Running
(1972)
In the future, all of Earth’s plant life has died. The only remaining flora is stored in a fleet of greenhouse ships in space. But when protagonist Freeman Lowell is ordered to destroy the forests he’s so passionate about protecting, his disobedience puts him in direct conflict with the rest of his crew. Check it out and discover why it’s considered one of the all-time gems of the sci-fi genre.
1. Gattaca
(1997)
One of the most respected sci-fi films of the last couple decades, Gattaca paints an all-too believable portrait of a permanent underclass of humans based on their “inferior” genetic material. Faking genetic tests with borrowed DNA, protagonist Vincent is days away from his dream of traveling to space. But can he maintain his charade long enough to make it to the launch? Watch it and find out.

The Last Starfighter. It was overshadowed by Tron, but it is a lot of fun and a truly historical work for its use of CG effects.
Buckaroo Banzai? A bit dated but very cool. And what about 5th Element? Visually stunning, quirky… and what a wrapping job!
Event Horizon
La Jette. This novelette of a movie has plenty of punch despite the bulk of the film consisting of black and white stills and the hassle of subtitles. The plot became the basis for the also under-rated 12 Monkeys, but the French original is much better. Make sure to get the recently released Criterion CD (but skip the other Chris Marker movie on the same disc.)
As someone who considers Gattaca to be her all time favorite movie, I whole heartedly approve of this list.
Yay … some love for “The Hidden”. You could tell that the whole plot is a device to give everyone a chance to shoot, crash and burn up everything in sight, but they ran with the ball quite a distance.
Freejack
yeah that’s right
Gattaca is my favourite movie. I’m glad that the author thinks the same.
Thanks!
Couple OF. Silly rednecks, language is for normal people.
Speaking of virtual reality films in 1999, The Thirteenth Floor has a few good ideas going for it as well.
What? No Dark City? Well, if you guys haven’t seen it, you’ve missed out on something stunning. THE most underrated sci-fi movie of all time IMO.
if you want under appreciated and/or crappy sci-fi movies, then go talk to my high school science teachers… i swear the science department had a list that they made everyone taking a science based class to watch… and since i took 3 science based subjects i saw most of them more then once… and for every good movie there exists 5 or more that shouldn’t have made it past filming…
AWESOME however is the fact that for every 3 good movies there exists 1 movie that is a pornographic rip off of one of them…
Gattaca is one of the best science-fiction films, but i think that Logan’s Run is one of the great forgotten.
I would dare to recommend THX1138 from George Lucas too.
I will include Darkstar just for the philosophical conversation between Doolitle and the Bomb #20

Great, I readed the short storie of Ellison “A boy and a dog” a lot of years ago, but I didn’t know there was a film! I’ve just downloaded and seen it. And what a surprise, Don Johnson! hehehe how young, what a looks! The original was much more cruel. A good list. And thank you very much cos you’ve given me the title of another film I saw a lot of years ago, but I couldn’t remember the name ‘Silent runner’. Darkstar is magnific too, yeah, what a dialogue with that silly bomb!
I was very dissapointed with Sunshine, the starting was great but the end is a big crap and stupid, with a very nasty jumping of camera constantly and darkness to avoid making good FX! They probably ran out of budget
Oooh. Just watched Equilibrium, it was the only unknown movie for me in the list and…it really sucks. It’s just a mix of sci-fi cliches, composing a ridiculous movie. Worst on the list, doesn’t deserve it.
And… Donnie Darko. One of the most most most unknown sci-fi movies and one of the best films ever made. It should be included in the first place over Gatacca IMHO.
The music of Silent Running is by Peter Schickle (aka PDQ Bach). I agree the Last Starfighter is so fun. I love Boy and his Dog–powdered white faces. Missed Liquid Sky on the list; definately cult: “Me and my rhythm box” was the underground song from it. Forbidden Planet was a classic–now underappreciated: first electronic music for film “tonalities” as the music score is called on the credits. Enemy Mine is another lost treasure, but more for the acting–WOW! Louis Gosset Jr.is awesome.
¿And The man of the earth?
I think you should add “level 13″ in this list … not many people knows about that movie but i think is worth to see
=)
sorry about my previous comment … the proper translation in english is “The Thirteenth Floor” …. my fault
What! No Zardoz?!
Tarkovsky´s Solaris !!!
And as thelolzod said; Dark City. There is no Matrix without Dark City. It´s the ORIGINAL movie.
Gattaca is one of my favourite Sci-fi films, too. I’d add a very rare movie called “paranoia 1.0″ in wich companies use nanobots for doing people to consume their products.
I translate some titles of above to spanish versions: #6 Oculto, #5 Un chico y su perro, #2 Naves misteriosas. The rest of them preserve the original title when translated to spanish.
I have to 100% agree with everything, thelolzod, said.
Infact, I only came on here to see if Dark City was on the list. It was WAY over-shaddowed by The Matrix, some people even think it ripped it off a little, though it was released a year BEFORE.
My favourite film of all time, easily.

“Man from Earth”, its a great movie. No special effects, but one of the best Sci-Fi movies I have saw.
Not one mention of Cube. *sighs*
Liquid Sky … hmmm … I dunno … let me see … argh! WTF is this!?!?!?!? Only the trailer is a fucking crap, it should be rickrolled!
Maybe “Event Horizon” is better than “Sunshine”
Tarkovsky´s Solaris !!! – I agree
Silent running is boring
1th place “The Man of the Earth”
I loved Gattaca when I saw it in the cinema as well as Moon, but I would say that Leve 13 and Dark City are really good as well and not many people know about them.
Anyway, I really appreciate the list and I will see the ones I miss.
Thanks
Wow! These are some of my favorite movies, especially “The Hidden”. Guess I’ll have to watch them soon.
You’ve got to be kidding, Gattaca is your number 1. You just discredited the entire list and forced me to disregard all these films. It’s not even in the top 100 of all time. The plot is so transparent and the concept simplistic. A future where there is an underclass genetically determined, where the hero somehow manages to trick them. Do you even think about the world we live in now? I think that possible future world would at least be better than our own, where it is not the genetically gifted that are pushed ahead but the wealthy.
Soldier with Kurt Russel is a great sci fi movie that should be on this list. Kurt had very little lines in the movie and still projected his emotion on the camera. most of the movies on this list are my favorite sci fi movies of all time and I own most of them.
Here is one you all have forgot about Battlefield Earth by John Travolta.
Like I am not a big fan of Ron L Hubbert’s relgion but I do think John Travolta could have done a better job at making this book into a great movie but he didn’t as it bombed at the movies here in Oz and around the world.
12 monkeys. nuff said.
Fifth Element for sure! I LOVE that movie! Also agree that Gattaca was kinda lame, wouldn’t put it at number one that’s for sure… Also loved Blade Runner, that’s a good oldie. Thanks for the list, there’s a few I haven’t seen and will be checking them out for sure. Peace out all
I just watched Silent Running. How incredibly boring. The story was fine, but it was drawn out with long useless songs while it showed him living, and incredibly drawn out dialog. The whole story could be told in detail in about 1-2 pages and should have only been 30min.
